00600	Dear Mr. Thorne,
00700
00800 I have enclosed some examples of my computer music printing system. The
00850
00900	final form of the Bonporti-Smith work is printed by conventional
00950
01000	photo-lithography methods. The over-sized original of each page was produced by
01050
01100	the computer and then photographically reduced by 40%. The photo and press work
01150
01200	for this kind of copy comes to about $16 to $23 per page (500 copies). All the
01250
01300	other copy enclosed is produced by a XEROX machine hooked directly to the
01350
01400	computer. I consider these as proof sheets (not up to publication standards)
01450
01500	but completely adequate for almost any performance purposes.
01550
01600 The individual parts are produced by my automatic part extractor. Most
01650
01700	of the standard transpositions are available (the computer takes less than a
01750
01800	second to transpose a full page.)
01900
03300 It is difficult to judge exact costs, but for experimental purposes I
03350
03400	have worked out a price list for the production of these XEROX sheets. The
03450
03500	prices are based on the use of student labor (working as research assistants at
03550
03600	c.$5/hr) plus a little for the computer lab's overhead. (This work is loosely
03650
03700	considered "research" and there are no charges for computer use at this time.)
03750
04300 .80 per line for scores
04400 .25 per line for parts from a computerized score.
04500
04600	Thus the charge for score and parts to the enclosed Bach Prelude and Fugue would
04650
04700	be in the neighborhood of $200 - $250. Multiple copies can be produced at
04750
04800	regular XEROX prices, c. .04/page.
04900
05200 Depending on the availability of student help, the Bach work could be
05250
05300	turned out in 2 to 5 weeks. One very important advantage of this system is that
05350
05400	once the composer has proof read the score, the parts will surely be correct.
05450
05500	Usually the only editing of parts necessary is to add some of the dynamics and
05550
05600	improve the visual aspects of the layout.
05700
06200 In our phone conversation I believe I mentioned that Walter Anderson, of
06250
06300	the N.E.A. music division, expressed interest in my system as a means of
06350
06400	improving the circulation of American music. Perhaps ACA could convince him to
06450
06500	sponsor a pilot project to print ACA works using some of the funds that are
06550
06600	given out to composers to pay copyist fees.
06700
07000 No matter what the source of the funds, I would be interested in trying
07050
07100	a few projects. Of course I am not in a position to do a massive amount of work
07150
07200	but it is to my benefit to try my system on a variety of pieces.
07500
07600
07700
07800
07900
08000 Very sincerely,
08100
